The privately-owned Featherbed Nature Reserve is a pristine piece of land situated on the Western Head of Knysna and is only accessible by ferry.
This 4-hour family-friendly outing departs daily including a ferry cruise, 4×4 vehicle drive a 2,2 km guided nature walk. The views are breath-taking, and the knowledgeable nature guides will share their insights of the area, fauna and flora. Once completed you will be treated to a spectacular outdoor buffet food experience included in the tour.
A must-do trip while in Knysna and suitable for young and old. Good walking shoes are recommended as well as cameras, hats, sunblock in summer and a warm jacket in winter on the ferry.
This excursion includes:
a return ferry cruise on the Knysna Lagoon to the Featherbed Nature Reserve,
a 4×4 vehicle drive up the headland on Reserve, stopping at spectacular viewpoints,
a specialist guide offering information on Knysna’s history, fauna & flora,
an optional guided 2.2 km nature walk through coastal forest and fynbos into ancient sea caves,
and finally a world renowned buffet lunch served in the Food Forest Restaurant under a canopy of Milkwood trees.
This excursion requires a minimum of 10 passengers before we can depart.

This was a great experience and, throughout, very well managed by the engaging and friendly Featherbed staff. The ferry rides there and back were delightful and our guide Morris was highly entertaining and informative. The walk was worth every step, with quite astounding views of the Knysna estuary and, in the caves along the way, an absorbing sense of our ancient history. Lunch under the trees was a true treat, with copious amounts of excellent fare! I'll certainly do this trip again. - Karel
An Absolutely Unforgettable Experience! From the moment we boarded the ferry across the lagoon, we knew we were in for something special. The entire journey to the Knysna Featherbed Nature Reserve was filled with breath-taking views and a sense of calm that can only be found in a place of such natural beauty. - The Guide on the boat sounded like he knew each island and building personally. Upon arrival, the staff were incredibly welcoming and the whole operation was seamless. Our guide for the tractor-drawn trailer tour was fantastic---so knowledgeable and passionate about the local history, flora, and fauna. We learned so much while soaking in the stunning scenery, from the majestic cliffs to the lush forests. The included buffet lunch was a highlight in itself. Served in a beautiful, open-air setting, the food was absolutely delicious with a wide variety of options to choose from. It was the perfect way to refuel before exploring more of the reserve. They think of every detail. This isn't just a tour; it's a full-day adventure that captures the essence of Knysna. Amazing Experience. I would do it again in a heartbeat. I would however prefer the lunch after the walk to enjoy the deck and view for a longer time and 1 hour with lunch. - Tamryn
